Heartbreaker...
Girls San Fran played an earnest, heart wrenching and stoned gig that I thoroughly enjoyed. And kept welling up with tears… because of the music, and because the lead singer looked so painfully thin and unhealthy compared to the last time i saw them. But the tears were mainly a culmination of a few very tough weeks involving a visa application, and J. leaving Sydney for a few weeks.
Still...

Undertow-Warpaint by Mushroom Music
I love Warpaint’s spacey fuzzy harmonies. And their all-girlness. Can’t wait to see them at Laneway

I wanna go surfin'
The Drums were a slice of summer magic on a rainy winter Sunday. They were painfully good lucking of course, but not afraid to bust out some (not even ironic!) dance moves, with a tambourine. I thought they had a real UK aesthetic and sound, but they live in Brooklyn predictably I suppose. Their music is in no way challenging or original, but is insanely, i nearly typed inanely which is also...

Web design bits
The Biennale has seen me doing more design work again, which I really enjoy. I’ve created a few call to action buttons for www.bos17.com, as well as an eDM banner and couple of ads for partner sites Two Thousand and Art Asia Pacific.

Minolta love
J bought me a beautiful old minolta in a leather case. I think he bought it solely because of the case. But we finally got some film processed and delightedly, it takes absolutely gorgeous pictures, is really easy to load and remove film from and more reliable than some of my other old cameras. New favourite. Photo: James by Heff

#BoS17
I’m working for the 17th Biennale of Sydney…It’s a sweet gig and I’m working very hard. On a completely objective level, have you seen the Biennale’s visual identity? Holy shit it’s good. Designed by font nerd extraordinaire and all round nice guy Barnbrook. Currently the whole of Sydney is covered in sleazy Biennale pink (pantone #C1003E, indelibly etched in...

Quick K.Rudd - Censor the internet
or virgins will be raped…
I find ‘serious’ Australian reporting hilarious because of pieces like this one
The SMH is a daily broadsheet, and compared with UK press (OK the Guardian and Independent) the quality of the editorial is low, generally has sensationalist tendencies and can’t help but push a kind of Fox news right wing sensibility. Seriously Rupert Murdoch is far...

See you later London
So i’ve got that ‘See you Later’ glow today. I’ve finished work and now I’ve got a couple of weeks to enjoy some of London’s winter delights.
Of course leaving london isn’t going to be such an easy premise. i can’t even begin to embark on a list of everything i love about london, particularly the east end. i’ll certainly miss scummy moody...
If you want to view paradise...
simply look around and view it.
One man bands are largely underrated. Just saw the immensely talented Stairs to Korea, he didn’t have the one man band novelty factor…like the AWESOME Bob Log, so wasn’t thrashing various limbs attached to drums and whatnot. But he did make some very nice unpretentious layered tunes, and finished with a Willy Wonka cover. Unashamedly love the old...

Beck says: good idea, can *i* have a dog for christmas (age 27)
I can’t wait to see her. Notice she’s already doing the celebrity toe point?
La dolce vita
We had post pizza and good time group holiday depression. It rained in Rome, we tried to compensate for our inappropriate clothing with wierd gelato…the sage tasted like hash. We were given roses, bought matching smutty stockings, stayed with the wierd lady and had the longest day on the worst hangovers, ever. Despite all this, it was hilariously, disastrously fun.
La dolce vita…the...

Meme…what does it mean? Put it in context, try it in a sentence… The other day I was sharing a meme with my Grandad… Could you supply me with the standard deviation, the median and the meme? Despite a cultural studies degree, and a rudimentary grip on language, i’m at a bit of a loss with this one. And it’s one of those terms that seems to have fallen into fashion...

No Tim Burton, I will not fall for this again
I thought everyone entertained secret morbid thoughts about their own tragic demise…just last night i got choked up thinking about the prospect of…you know i cant even put the words to print because i’m too superstitious, but it involved 2 wheels, falling and um dying. And I entertain these kind of thoughts fairly regularly…i related to that ‘Look both ways’...

Suddenly it transpires
Very few people do a job that they enjoy…it’s slightly more realistic to expect to learn a few things from good managers, get the opportunity to be stretched mentally and creatively, meet a few nice people or at least have a little bit of respect/ belief in the organisation that employs you. With the exception of meeting a few nice people, i enjoy none of the above at my current job....

Insert predictable gag about loving girls here
Went to a free in-store by Girls this week. A free gig…in a tiny little record shop…and it was on Tuesday….which might just serve to change my ranking of Tuesday as my most hated day.
I know it’s a cliche, but they rock. Their sound is really beautiful and refined, and much more mellow than their marketers would have you believe. They have ‘next big thing’...
It's jarring
When someone says something, and the realisation arrives that you’ve been needing to hear that something said for a very long time.
Now i miss the need that i never knew i had…

Polaroids of course
This week they announced the Impossible Project was in fact a success…so they’ll be producing instant cameras and film again next year. This news almost warrants an exclamation mark, but i hate exclamation marks, probably more than any other punctuation device. But i digress…this is supposed to be stuff i like. We’re going to cycle down to the Pumphouse...

Falling in love with someone...
Going to see Nouvelle Vague tonight…I can’t wait. AND it’s at the Roundhouse, which I love as a gig venue. Awesome acoustics and so steeped in London’s wild post punk history.
I actually know very little about the members of the band. I think they rotate vocalists and stuff, but I love their sound. I like how they have such a different take on those synth-y new wave songs...

Guernica at Whitechapel
I’ve been dying to get to the Whitechapel Gallery since it reopened so we pootled down Brick Lane on le weekend. Mango lassi in hand…mmmm…lassi…anyhoo
I think the place is a nice little ode to East London. You know, local artists like Tracy Emin and Gilbert and George have really shaped it’s recent history. There’s also lots of references to Whitechapel’s...

Yeehah Gang Gang Dance
So I was hugging myself with joy when I found out not only were Animal Collective playing at Brixton Academy, but they were supported by Gang Gang Dance…Quite a crew came along, threatening to incessantly sing ‘My Girls’ at them till they bought tickets worked a treat. It’s difficult to get my friends to default from their East London routine I tell you. But it was wholly...
